Rugby league referee assaulted during game
A rugby league referee was assaulted following a mass brawl during an amateur game in Castleford yesterday (Sunday).
The match between Lock Lane and East Leeds was abandoned after one of the visiting team carried out an unprovoked assault on the referee.
Insp Dave Bugg, of Castleford neighbourhood policing team, said: “The fight had stopped but then one of the East Leeds players jumped on the referee and started to attack him.
“He had to be dragged off by his own players.”
Insp Bugg added enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
