Runners ready for annual Wakefield Hospice 10k

At least 2,000 runners are expected to tear across the city's roads during the 21st Wakefield Hospice 10k race.

It is hoped that more than £55,000 will be raised from the event on Sunday – with one hour of end-of-life patient care being funded for every £20 made.

Event organiser Holli Kellett said: “We are over the moon with the number of people who have entered in 2016. “The money each and every one of these runners are raising through sponsorship will be making a difference to a patient and their family.”

In addition to the 10k, which starts at 9am at Clarence Park Arena, there will be a 1k Mini Run at 10.15am.

Wakefield companies Richard Kendall Estate Agents, on Northgate, and Beaumont Legal, based at Paragon Business Village, have sponsored the event. Thirty four members of staff from both companies will take part in the race.

Company partner Claire Kendall said: “Throughout the year the hospice works tirelessly on fundraising events to ensure that their commitment to providing the highest level of symptom management and care for people who have advanced active, progressive and life threatening illness.”

The total funds it is thought will be raised would be enough to provide a full week of care at the hospice, based on Aberford Road.

This year’s event will be started by Evie Brailsford, who has appeared on promotional material after taking part in the 2015 race. She said: “I feel very honoured to be asked to represent the race.”

Horbury Road, Northfield and Southfield Lane will be closed to all traffic from 9am-10am, after which they will be progressively re-opened.

Anyone wishing to enter or exit these roads should do so before 8.45am.

You can still register for the main race from 8am-8.45am, or the 1k Mini Run from 9am, at the arena.
