There was also entertainment from a band, visits to the grave of 19th century MP John Gully, lectures in the almshouses and a number of stalls, including ones selling war memorabilia.

The annual event was organised by Ackworth Heritage Group. This year’s First World War theme commemorated the 100th anniversary of the start of the war.

Stephen Carlile, secretary of the heritage group, said: “The event was brilliant and we were really pleased with it. Lots of people turned up and enjoyed the various stalls on the green. They all had tea on the green and enjoyed the band playing. Everybody had a great time. The fair is an annual event organised by the heritage group to provide something good for the community.”
