And Mick Brown, of Western Way, Normanton, was crowned Yorkshire’s Strongest Man at Frickley Athletic FC on Sunday.

More than 500 people attended to see 14 people compete in six gruelling events including a log lift, tractor pull, deadlift and the atlas stones.

Mr Brown, 31, a digger driver, said: “It’s absolutely brilliant. I’m over the moon to have won after coming second for the past two years.

“I’ve trained really hard for it and I knew I was near enough the strongest I’ve ever been. Being on home turf helped as well, looking up knowing that there were people there cheering you on.

“Tom Shaw was probably the favourite going into it but in the end I beat him by a point. I didn’t win an event outright but being consistently in the top three gave me the points to win.

“My little lad took the trophy into school on Monday, there’s a bit of my dad’s bigger than your dad but it’s all good fun.”

The contest, organised by Hulk’s Strongman Division, was refereed by Britain’s Strongest Man, Eddie Hall, who has won the title four times.

Mark Anglesea, event organiser, said: “The event was a great success. The 500-strong crowd certainly weren’t disappointed with the show.

“Mick Brown was determined from the start. He wowed the supporters and stormed through in the top three during all five events.

“He was absolutely overjoyed to win his well deserved victory.”
