SLIDESHOW: World Book Day 2016

Where's Wally, Oompa-Loompas and the Cat in the Hat were among the fictional creatures who turned up at schools last week.

Children celebrated World Book Day by dressing as their favourite book characters and taking part in a variety of literary activities.

Pupils at Mackie Hill J&I School, Crigglestone, dressed up in their pyjamas and onesies while children from Ryhill J&I School created comic strips, researched and wrote biographies about illustrators and authors, drew pictures in the style of Quentin Blake and created their own story boxes.

Children at Stanley Grove Primary enjoyed a special book day assembly and parade as well as some magic tricks from Mr Wonka.

At Stanley St Peter’s C of E School, pupils talked about their favourite books and enjoyed reading based activities while youngsters at St Ignatius Catholic Primary School used green screen technology to impose backgrounds relating to the characters they were dressed up as onto their photographs.

Pupils at Northfield Primary School in South Kirkby shared their favourite stories and enjoyed workshops with author Christina Gabbitas while children at Three Lane Ends Community Primary School chose their favourite books to read in class. They dressed as characters from books including Dragon in the Cupboard, Ten Little Pirates and Goldilocks and the Three Bears at the school on Methley Road, Castleford.

At Airedale Juniors, children were read to by players from Castleford Tigers and at Featherstone’s St Wilfrid’s Catholic High School, students dressed up as their favourite literary characters for the chance to win prizes.

Youngsters at Netherton J&I took part in the big world book day quiz and pupils at St Austin’s Primary Academy loved their reading corner, arranged by staff who visited from Sainsbury’s in Trinity Walk.

Pupils at South Parade Primary in Ossett and St Mary’s C of E, Wakefield, dressed up for the day and children at Westerton Primary were given some book donations - delivered by superheroes from TNT.
