SLIDESHOW - Young racers sprint to victory at Pontefract Grand Prix

Top cyclists took to the streets of Pontefract as they battled it out it in the town’s second annual Grand Prix event.

Hundreds of people caught a glimpse of the action, which was organised by Polypipe Cycling Team. Wakefield Council and British Cycling, on Sunday.

Youngsters were also able to take to the track just hours before the race as organisers opened up the track.

Pete Williams, of One Pro Cycling, took top spot in the elite men’s race, while Tom Pidcock, of Speedflex RT, sprinted to victory in both the under-16s and men’s 234 races.

In the girl’s races, Masie Vasic, of Eastlands Velo, came first in the under-14s race, and Anna Docherty, of Clifton Cycling club in the under-16s event.

Ashley Brown, event organiser and Polypipe Cycling Team manager, said: “I’m delighted with the day and seeing the local community and amateur cyclists mixing with some of the UK’s best athletes was brilliant. This bodes well for future editions of the event and everyone seemed to have a great day.”

Coun Les Shaw, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said: “It was great to have the Pontefract Grand Prix back in the town for a second year.

“There were fantastic crowds cheering on everybody from the elite riders to the athletes of the future in the youth race, proving once again that Pontefract is the perfect location for this kind of event.”
