Teenage boy rescues pigs from flames

Teenager Joe Hague saw the flames at his home farm and bravely fought his way through the blaze to free five pigs which were locked in a metal shed.

The fire at Old Musgrave Farm started around 6pm last night. Seven fire engines were called to help put of the large blaze which tore through paper bails as well as farm machinery.

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene for the next 12 hours to ensure the fire is completely out.

Mr Hague, who lives at the farm on Main Street, with his grandparents, said he just knew he had to save the pigs and did not think about his own safety.

The Hemsworth Arts and Community College pupil said: “I saw the flames and rang the fire brigade straight away and then we all broke into the shed and rescued the pigs. I wasn’t scared I just wanted to make sure they got out ok.”

His grandma, Georgina Coles said: “He is a hero. We are so proud of him for what he has done.”

None of the animals on the farm were hurt.

He was taken to Barnsley Hospital and was treated for smoke inhalation.
