Teenager arrested after town centre shooting

A teenager has been arrested following a shooting in Batley last night.

The arrest in the Bunkers Lane area of Staincliffe came after police were called to the forecourt of the BP petrol station in Bradford Road at 10.25pm.

A 23-year-old man was found by police and had suffered gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital.

His injuries are not life-threatening.

Det Chief Insp Mark McManus, said: “A 19-year-old man has now been arrested in connection with the shooting and will be questioned this afternoon by detectives.

“Our enquiries remain ongoing and we are very much continuing to appeal for information.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.”

He had said earlier that he wanted to reassure residents that this appears to be an isolated incident and that increased neighbourhood policing patrols would be in the area to reassure the local community.
