Tesco customers support food bank

South Elmsall’s Westfield Centre food bank has replenished its stocks thanks to generous donations from Tesco shoppers.

A ‘food drive’ was held at the Tesco store in Hemsworth at the weekend in a bid to meet the growing demand for the service offered by the food bank.

Jim Tubman, chairman of the food bank committee, said: “So much food was collected that South Elmsall Council’s tractor and trailer were used to transport it from Tesco to the food bank.

“We’d like to thank Simon Heptinstall, the manager of Hemsworth Tesco and his staff for their help, town council clerk Clare Baxter and local councillors for their support, but the biggest thank you is for members of the public who gave so generously and without whom our work couldn’t happen.”

The independent food bank, which works on a referral basis, is run by a committee made up of representatives from local churches, South Elmsall Town Council, South Elmsall Communities Ltd and local volunteers.

Agencies such as GPs, the Citizens Advice Bureau, Wakefield Council and WDH, can issue vouchers which can be taken to the food bank where three days worth of food will be provided.
