Train passenger hurled racial abuse

A Kinsley man subjected a railway worker to racial abuse after vaulting the ticket barriers, a court heard.

Daniel Wilsher, 27, of Common Road, insulted an Asian member of staff after making a dash for a waiting train at Westgate railway station in Wakefield.

Wakefield and Pontefract Magistrates’ Court heard how Wilsher jumped the automated ticket barriers to get to the waiting Fitzwilliam train.

Prosecutor Diane Gomersall told how a member of staff challenged him at 6.50pm on February 10 but was met with a volley of racial abuse.

He also subjected another worker to jibes about his weight and glasses.

Wilsher made further remarks before leaving the station and was detained nearby.

Wilsher admitted racially aggravated disorderly conduct, disorderly conduct and entering a railway concourse without a valid ticket.

Martyn Lord, mitigating, said “This occasion he deeply regrets. It was the first time in 12 months he had any alcohol to drink. He had been out and clearly had more than was good for him.”

Wilsher was sentenced to 100 hours of unpaid community work. He must pay £300 compensation and a £60 victim surcharge.
