Any additional change received will be donated to the NHS' Covid-19 Appeal.

A spokesman for Arriva said: "Taking these steps will help to reduce the amount of physical contact between our customers and drivers.

"Other measures we are taking include enhancing the driver’s protective screen, discouraging passengers from sitting close to the driver’s cab and deep cleaning our buses on a daily basis.

"The safety of our colleagues and customers remains our number one priority and we will continue to monitor and adjust our approach as and when the situation evolves."

Contactless payments only will begin tomorrow, Friday, April 17.
