Lorry fire causes huge tailbacks on M62

Commuters faced major delays this afternoon (Friday) after two lanes of the M62 were closed due to a lorry fire.

The lorry, which was carrying scrap car parts, caught fire eastbound between junction 25, A644 (Brighouse) and junction 26, M606 (Chain Bar) at around 2pm.

Firefighters from Batley, Cleckheaton and Rastrick attended and used two hose reels to extinguish the flames.

The vehicle was moved onto the services at Hartshead Moor, but it wasn’t until 5.30pm until both lanes of the motorway were reopened - causing huge tailbacks. A slip road closure was also in place until 6.26pm.

Nobody was injured and the fire is believed to have been caused by a tyre blow out which set the underside of the vehicle alight.
