M62 closure: Hour long delays and diversions in place after huge pile up involving lorries and cars

Highways England has confirmed delays of at least an hour on the M62 after it was closed following a major crash involving a number of lorries and cars.

The eastbound carriageway between junction 22 for Denshaw and 23 for Outlane is currently blocked.

Highways England is reporting that Greater Manchester Police, Greater Manchester Fire Service and Yorkshire Ambulance Service are at the scene.

Pictures emerging from the scene show a crash between a number of HGVs.

Large tailbacks can be seen on both sides of the carriageway.

Drivers are being urged to expect major delays in the area.

The M62 eastbound as is is expected to stay closed for the foreseeable future.

A Highways England spokesperson said: "The M62 in West Yorkshire is closed eastbound between Junction 20 (Rochdale) and Junction 26 (Bradford) due to a serious incident.

Emergency services including West Yorkshire Police, West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance are in attendance. Highways England has resources deployed to assist.

"Road users are advised to expect disruption and to allow extra journey time."

The westbound carriageway between Junction 24 (Huddersfield) and Junction 21 was closed but has now reopened. Congestion is still expected in the area.

Eastbound diversion route

Exit the M62 eastbound at J20 and follow the hollow black circle diversion symbol on road signs.

At the junction join the A627(M) northbound.

At the junction with the A664 join the A664 eastbound and follow this road to its junction with the A6193.

At this junction road users are advised to start following the hollow black square diversion symbol on road signs.

Proceed along the A664 east for approximately 2 miles to the roundabout with Halifax Road (A58).

At the roundabout, take the second exit onto Halifax Road (A58) and proceed along this road for approximately 2 miles to the roundabout with Todmorden Road (A6033).

At the roundabout, take the second exit onto Todmorden Road (A6033) and proceed along this road for approximately 7 miles to the roundabout with A646.

At the roundabout, take the second exit onto the A646 and proceed along this road for approximately 10 miles to the junction with Aachen Way (A58).

At the junction, join the A58 and proceed along this road for approximately 8 miles towards the M62 (J26)

At the roundabout, take the third exit to re-join M62 east.

Westbound diversion route;

Exit the M62 at J24 and proceed to the merge with the A629 at the end of the slip road, following the solid black circle diversion symbol on road signs.

Merge onto A629 and proceed along this road for approximately 300m to the roundabout with the A629.

At the roundabout, take the second exit onto the A629 and proceed along this road for approximately 3 miles to the junction with the A646.

At the junction, turn left onto the A646 and proceed along this road for approximately 18 miles to the roundabout with the A6033.

At the roundabout, take the first exit onto the A6033 and proceed along this road for approximately 5 miles to the junction with the A58.

At the junction, turn right onto the A58 and proceed along this road for approximately 3 miles to the roundabout with the A664.

At the roundabout, take the first exit onto the A664 and proceed along this road for approximately 2 miles to the junction with the A6193.

At the junction, turn left onto the A6193 and proceed along this road for approximately 1 mile towards with the M62 (J21).

At the roundabout, take the second exit to re-join M62 westbound.
