The other vehicle, a green Cirtroen C4, contained a family of five. Two of the passengers are receiving treatment for serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Police Sergeant Martin Greasley, of the Safer Roads and Neighbourhoods Team, said; “We would urge anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident and may have seen either of the vehicles prior the collision to come forward. Equally, if anyone witnessed the incident itself, we would urge them to come forward as they may hold vital information. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Firefighters from Mirfield and Dewsbury were called to the scene and put out a fire in the Ford Ka. They also treated the passengers in the Ka until paramedics arrived.

Nine ambulances attended in total.

Anyone who saw the vehicles before the incident, or who witnessed the collision is asked to contact the Safer Roads and Neighbourhoods Team East via 101.
