The triple parallel chem trails were spotted at dusk over Wakefield and parts of West Yorkshire, which brought conspiracy theorists out in force.

Clear skies on Sunday night had people looking upwards and, as darkness fell, three apparent plane trails, all close together, were illuminated by the moon.

The strange sight was visible around 9pm with many asking what it was.

Some said they must be military jets flying in formation, others that it was linked to the Northern Lights which were to be visible over Northern England while others speculated about satellites or something not of this world.

Conspiracy theorists even reckoned it could be linked to a sinister plot to spread Covid-19.

Plane spotters checked sky scanner apps – which track aircraft going overhead – and reckoned the trails were left by three Aer Lingus aircraft heading to Dublin from Germany.

The three aircraft were flying into Ireland from Berlin, Dusseldorf and Munich, they said. Aer Lingus has been contacted for confirmation.
