Update: Teenager held over blaze that caused 100 people to be evacuated from homes

An arsonist caused a huge blaze which led to about 100 people being evacuated from their homes.

Containers and tyres were set alight on land just off Barnsley Road, Moorthorpe, before the fire spread to an empty building.

All the people who were forced to leave their homes went to a nearby church as firefighters from South Kirkby, Pontefract, Wakefield and two engines from South Yorkshire tackled the blaze.

The fire broke out just after 9pm on Tuesday.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said officers had to evacuate 60 homes around the site of the fire.

He also said a 15-year-old from the area was arrested in connection with the incident and remained in custody.

Fire crews remained at the scene damping down this morning (Wednesday).
