Work to reduce congestion on M1 motorway junction complete

Work to reduce congestion at one of the M1’s busiest junctions near Wakefield has finished.

The Highways Agency has completed work on a £1.2m scheme at junction 40 at Flushdyke.

Works carried out includes the widening of the southbound exit slip road and roundabout from two to three lanes.

Roger Wantling, Highways Agency service delivery team leader, said: “Drivers will now experience a reduction in congestion and delays at this important junction.

“The work should also improve road safety and contribute to a reduction in accidents in the area.

“We would like to thank drivers for their patience while the work was carried out.”

Work to upgrade the motorway to a ‘smart motorway’ between junction 39 at Durkar and junction 42 at Lofthouse continues.

The Highways Agency expects the £120m scheme, which also aims to reduce congestion, to be complete by September 2015.
