Trio’s marathon success

Stroke survivor Berni Cooper, from Wakefield, ran the Virgin Money London Marathon dressed as a Pink Lady apple to raise funds for the Stroke Association.

The 33-year-old, who suffered a stroke in 2011, completed the 26.2 mile course in four hours 28 minutes.

She said: “My whole marathon experience was absolutely amazing. I had the most brilliant weekend and the support I got dressed as a Pink Lady apple was unbelievable.

“I feared I’d never walk again, let alone run. But I made an amazing recovery. I value every step I take now and being able to run is so wonderful. What better way to raise money and awareness for the Stroke Association, all while celebrating my life after a stroke?”

Friends Elaine Booth and Cath Smart completed the marathon last month in aid of Asthma UK.

Miss Booth, 47, of Denby Dale Road East, Durkar, and Miss Smart, 48, from Kinsley, raised more than £2,000.

Ms Booth said: “We would like to thank all our friends and family for sponsoring us and businesses in Durkar and Crigglestone and Wakefield for supporting us.

“Finishing a marathon was on my bucket list and it was an amazing experience. People were cheering us on and shouting our names to keep us going mile by mile. I’m so pleased we reached our target.

“We chose Asthma UK as some of my family have suffered and it is such a good charity.”
