A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “The driver of the tanker is currently trapped and is being freed by the Fire service. Due to flammable materials in the tanker, this is expected to take some time and has required that both carriageways are closed to ensure public safety.

Motorists are therefore advised to avoid the area for the foreseeable future. Any motorists held up by the incident are being diverted as quickly as possible.”

Traffic is currently queuing from junction 29 at Lofthouse.

The M1 has also been affected and drivers have been warned to expect delays.

Arriva has reported that bus services in Wakefield are currently running up to 20 minutes late.
