Around 1,300 people turned out for the 5km and 10km challenges, which raised more than £80,000 for Cancer Research UK on Sunday.

Event manager Harry Hardiker said: “It was a great day with lots of people coming together, united to beat cancer sooner.

“It’s a huge amount of money and we’re making a real difference. There was a fantastic atmosphere on the day, bathed in sunshine.”

Participants took to social media to celebrate completing the race, or to congratulate those that did.

Keeley Griffin posted on Twitter: “Me and Poppy enjoying our 5 minutes of fame! Such a special #raceforlife at #pontefract. Smashed my 10k PB too.”

User littlemisskitty, who raced for a range of family members, said: “Well #raceforlife2016 has arrived, good luck to all the other ladies at Pontefract #pinkarmy.” She later posted again that she was “very proud of my kids” when they had finished the challenge.

Chantelle posted: “Can’t believe we actually did it #raceforlife #pinkarmy #5krun @ Pontefract Racecourse.

Race for Life allows women to fundraise for Cancer Research UK through a Just Giving web page, often in memory of family members who have been affected by the disease.

The charity works to fund new research into the causes, effects and treatment for cancer.

As well as organising 5k and 10k challenges, Race for Life puts on the Pretty Muddy obstacle courses and marathons. The first Race for Life hike has been organised for September – but has already sold out.
