The cameras will be added later this month and video will be then streamed back to a traffic control centre.

Operators at the centre will then be able to adjust signals to help reduce congestion at the junctions at peak-times.

Coun David Dagger, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for transport and highways, said: “A significant amount of our road network is already monitored by CCTV which enables us to keep our eye on traffic flow and congestion.

“These new low cost cameras will be installed at the key traffic signals which are not covered by the CCTV so that we have an even better picture of what’s happening on our roads.

“Many of our traffic signals are connected to our Urban Traffic Control centre which enables us to make live adjustments to signals to help us respond to congestion problems in real time.

“The additional cameras will improve our ability to monitor and report traffic problems as well as helping us react to congestion issues as soon as possible.”

Data will also be sent to regional traffic information websites to provide commuters with the latest travel news.

Coun Dagger presented the plans in report to a full council meeting on Wednesday.

In his report he said: “This scheme will allow the addition of low cost traffic monitoring cameras to be installed at key traffic signal controlled junctions not presently covered by our existing CCTV systems.”
