Rainbow Pride chair Pauline Costello said “The principal aim was to celebrate the diverse culture and lifestyle of the LGBTQ community in Wakefield and challenge stereotypes break down barriers and build bridges with the community. I think we succeeded because we don’t intend to make a profit but a free point of access entertainment for the community.”

Stars at The Rainbow include Nicki French, who is best known for her hit 1995 dance cover version of Total Eclipse of the Heart and for representing the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2000. Among the local talent at The Rainbow are Pink Tribute Miss Understood and Sordid Secret.

The mayor of Wakefield, Coun Harry Ellis, will open the event at The Rainbow at noon. There will also be stalls on the day offering support and advice from local groups.

Meanwhile, The New Union show will be hosted by Miss Shirley and feature DJs, various tribute acts and an appearance by Luke Primmer. It will also stage an after party.

Among the supporters of Wakefield Pride are Ben’s Music Foundation, which has provided access to acts who have all given up their time to support the event.
