You’ve been eating Jaffa Cakes wrong for your entire life - here’s the proper way

Arguably one of the nation's most beloved sweet treats, lovers of the Jaffa Cake are about to be in for shock - apparently we’ve been eating them wrong for years.

A spokesperson for Jaffa Cakes recently revealed that, contrary to popular belief, the chocolate layer of the treat isn’t the top, but the bottom.

The surprising fact was confirmed on social media, after one fan shared the revelation following an interaction with the official Jaffa Cakes Facebook page.

‘A reservoir of chocolate’

The user, who is known only as David, claimed to have messaged the Jaffa Cake official page asking the question, “What side of the Jaffa is the bottom?”

The company replied, “Hi David, our Jaffa Cakes go through a reservoir of chocolate, so the chocolate is on the bottom. Thanks, Jaffa Cakes.”

David shared a screenshot of the conversation on the Facebook group, Family Lockdown Tips & Ideas.

David wasn’t the only one to be stunned by the news, with one person commenting on the post saying, “OMG just turned my world upside down.”

However, others weren’t so surprised. One commenter wrote, “Am I the only one who always thought the chocolate was the bottom anyway?”

Best way to eat one

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time questions have been posed over the proper way to eat a Jaffa Cake.

In 2018, McVities and Price (who own Jaffa Cakes) revealed the proper way to eat one - settling the debate once and for all.

Many people, inspired by the iconic ‘90s TV advert, go for the ‘half moon’ method when biting into a Jaffa Cake. According to research, 35 per cent prefer this method.

However, McVities revealed that ‘The All Rounder’ was the perfect way, giving eaters the optimum ratio of chocolate, orange jelly and sponge. ‘The All Rounder’ involves nibbling around the edge of the Jaffa Cake first, before enjoying the middle portion.

Food science expert, Dr Stuart Farrimond, commented on the revelation saying the different eating styles will result in different combinations of the three layers in each mouthful.

He said, “Our research concluded that the ‘All Rounder’ with the middle portion of the Jaffa Cake eaten as one, gives the optimum sweetness, taste and flavour, and this can only be fully appreciated by nibbling the edge off first and then eating the middle portion alone.”
