Normanton boxing star Farrah Cunniff is crowned national champion

Normanton’s rising boxing star Farrah Cunniff has crowned a successful comeback from an operation by becoming a national amateur champion for the first time at senior level.

White Rose Boxing Club’s Farrah won everything in front of her at junior and youth levels and is now progressing well to the senior ranks after having to overcome a nose operation.

Her biggest success came at the weekend when she won the NAC National title at 62.5kg with a brilliant performance, overcoming the odds to defeat the number one GB seed with a unanimous decision.

Farrah was not far away from winning the contest inside the distance as she forced her opponent, Amy Nolan, of Moss Side Fire, to take two standing counts after being hurt by big shots.

And she kept her discipline well despite Nolan trying to mix it up and make the fight dirty.

It was a dream achieved for the Normanton boxer after she was denied a crack at the national title last year due to a broken nose.

Her success has further put her club, Wakefield’s White Rose, on the national map as this is their first senior open class national title victory for a number of years.

Farrah is now looking forward to a forthcoming GB and England assessment when she can try to move on to international level having conquered at national level.

She is also looking ahead to Haringey in June where she will represent Yorkshire for the fourth time in a row in the International Box Cup, hoping to become a four-time champion at the prestigious event.
