They have grown so much over the last few years that it has made the current set-up problematic for keeping the cricket enthusiasts that descend on Frickley each week able to train and fulfil their potential.

When commercial manager and first team player Tom Hemingway spotted an opportunity to secure some funding through The Grassroots Project at All Star Prizes – a competition website based in Leeds that offer luxury prize raffles for things such as cars, cash, tech and holidays – he jumped at the chance.

Tom said: “When we saw the applications were open for funding, we submitted one straight away and were lucky enough to be shortlisted.

"The voting process was very close and we were up against some well supported local sports teams, but we managed to pull it off and win the public vote to secure the funding – and we couldn’t be happier!

"This puts us within £8,000 of our end goal. The planning application plus construction costs are astronomical and we couldn’t even think about building this, without the support of businesses like All Star Prizes.”

Speaking about The Grassroots Project, managing director Matthew Colley said: “The Grassroots Project is our way of giving back to the communities that play on our website week in and week out.

"We’ve so far given away over £5,000 to community-based organisations across the UK and we really hope that the money will make a big difference to the teams that have been lucky enough to secure funding.”

Frickley CWCC was formed in 1903 as a community benefit by the Carlton Main Colliery Company to support the employees at Frickley Colliery. Now, 122 years later the it has grown from strength to strength as a cricket club and community hub, now having over 100 members, including more than 40 seniors, 50 plus juniors and 20 ladies who are all involved with the cricket and also hosts weekly sessions with Andys Man Club.

The club’s aim is to fundraise a two-lane net facility so it has enough training space to accommodate all its senior, junior and ladies teams.

To achieve their necessary upgrade of their training facilities they have set up a Crowdfunding page, which can be found at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/frickley-cwcc-two-lane-training-facility
