Jack Hughes leads from front as Townville KO Methley in Heavy Woollen Cup

There was plenty of good batting on show, but it was 2019 losing finalists Townville who went through as they chased down’s Methley’s 238-6 to win by a six-wicket margin.

Skipper Jack Hughes led the way for Townville as he made 101 not out, including 12 fours, and shared an unbroken stand of 115 with Conor Harvey (63no, with four sixes and five fours).

Defeat was tough on Methley batsmen Jason Marshall, who hit 11 fours and three sixes in a knock of 110, and Eitan Litvin (39).

Matthew Rees produced the round’s best bowling figures of 6-42 as Castleford dismissed Kirkburton for 119 to complete a 40-run win in their first round tie. Liam Hyde (41) top scored in Cas’s 150 total.

South Kirkby went out after a six-wicket defeat to Elsecar.

James Butler (33) and Dylan Moran (27) top scored as Kirkby were bowled out for 151.

In the Bradford League on Saturday there were opening day defeats for Townville and Methley in the Premier.

Townville pushed 2019 champions Woodlands all the way before going down by 10 runs.

Woodlands lost their first four wickets with just six runs on the board before recovering to make 168. Ritchie Bresnan (4-37), Jack Hughes (3-29) and Conor Harvey (3-53) made the champs work for their runs.

Townville looked well placed to win when 148-6 in their reply, but their innings fell away after Hughes was out for 60.

Ex-Hanging Heaton player Tom Chippendale had a tough debut as captain of Methley as his former team romped to a 186-run win.

Hanging Heaton piled up 352-8 after going in first then bowled Methley out for 167.

Robert Clegg (3-44), Jordan Laban (39) and Rob Withers (35no) were Methley’s best performers.

Great Preston also had to endure a rough first game in Division Three as they had to chase a huge Brighouse total of 320-8 and lost by 179 runs.

Despite 4-81 from Cullum Jordan it was hard work for the Preston bowlers and their batsmen also toiled with skipper Ollie Baron (54) top scoring.

It was a better day for Great Preston seconds as they beat Carlton by 20 runs in the Second Teams Division One. Danny Harwood (6-16) starred.

In the same division, Methley seconds went down by 57 runs after making 165 with David Winter (49) top scoring.

Tim Walton (79) and Fin Walton (67) helped Townville seconds to a 43-run win over Birstall, who were all out for 149 in the Division Two match with Luke Slater taking 6-40.
