Sandal stay top of table despite losing for first time this season

Division One of the Bradford Cricket League has tightened up at the top following Sandal’s first defeat of the season.

Just two points cover the top three teams now, but Sandal remain top despite their seven-wicket loss at third-placed Yeadon.

An opening stand of 127 between Mali Bardouille-Lewis (88) and skipper Josh Watson (72) was built on by overseas player Muhammad Sarwar (65) as the leaders’ total of 238-7 was chased down.

Opener Sam Owens (72), Brandon Hewlett (54 from 46 balls) and Danny Riley (44 off 49) were the main contributors for Sandal.

Ossett also lost their Division One game against fourth-placed Hanging Heaton.

Going in first they made 222-7 as opener Josh Wild got them off to a flying start with 43 off 22 balls and this was built on by Iqbal Khan (57no) and Oliver Eldridge (41).

Wild followed up with three wickets in a two-over spell, but Hanging Heaton paced their run chase well to get home with three wickets and more than six overs to spare.

Altofts secured a valuable away win in a low-scoring Division Two contest at Hartshead Moor.

This was despite being bowled out for 131 and the score would have been worse but for some late order aggression from Craig Wood who hit four sixes and three fours in what turned out to be a match-winning knock of 49. Shamsullah Dost also contributed 31.

Hartshead Moor never recovered from a poor start and were all out for 85 as Wood completed a fine all-round performance with 4-38, Saif Tahir took 3-13 and Joshua Morris 2-34.

After a towering batting performance the previous week there were no repeat heroics for Streethouse as they were shot out for 84 to lose by eight wickets to Northowram Fields.

Ben Brown and Dishane Rodrigo both hit 22, but the innings never really got going and Northowram had no alarms completing victory.

The highest scoring match of the week came at Wrenthorpe where East Leeds won by five wickets in a Division Three contest that saw 623 runs scored.

The home side looked on course for victory after posting a big 311-7 thanks to a magnificent 120 from Australian Patrick Forrest, who hit a six and 12 fours. Valuable contributions also came from Shahzaib Sayeed (82) Max Carrington (50).

But East Leeds were undaunted by the challenge and chased down the runs as Sagar Sawant blasted an unbeaten 107 from just 80 balls.

Nazakat Hussain (5-28) and Syed Shah Bukhari (4-40) led the way as Wakefield St Michael’s bowled out Heckmondwike & Carlinghow for 132 on their way to a three-wicket win.

Rana Khan (44) led the St Michael’s reply.

Despite Scott Mullins’ 5-75 East Ardsley went down by 32 runs to Scholes.

Chasing their opponents’ 251-9 they put up a good effort only to fall short with Oliver Appleyard hitting 50, Michael Davies 37 and Thomas Daniels 37.

Carlton were dismissed for 125 as they lost their Premier Division match by 114 runs at home to Bradford & Bingley.

Ben Moffat’s 104 from 87 balls proved decisive as Bradford & Bingley recovered from 38-3 to post a 239-6 total.

Naveed Malik top scored for Carlton with 39, but he could not find much support.

• Ossett progressed to the second round of the Heavy Woollen Cup when they defeated Shelley by 32 runs.

Bowlers Oliver Eldridge (4-22) and Janaid Tanwir (3-52) played a key part as Shelley were dismissed for 197 in reply to 229.

Half centuries from Callum Geldart (58) and Haseen Bashir (53) were backed up by Saminda Ganwarige (39) as Ossett posted a challenging target.
