Wakefield Thornes make T20 Blast progress but suffer league setback

Wakefield Thornes had a mixed weekend as they enjoyed two T20 Blast victories, but suffered a second defeat of the season in the Yorkshire Southern Premier League.

Sunday's action saw the Wakefield team in fine form on home turf as they convincingly defeated Sprotbrough and Appleby Frodingham in the YCSPL T20 Blast Group B.

Against Sprotbrough it was the bowlers who took the plaudits as they were able to defend a 136-9 total.

All six bowlers used had wicket success with Matty Taylor (3-17 from three overs) leading the way as the visitors were dismissed for only 69 to fall 67 runs short.

Brad Green top scored for Thornes with 27.

Against Appleby Frodingham the batsmen performed more impressively as they justified choosing to go in first by piling up a 197-5 score from their 20 overs.

Jawad Akhtar (48) and James Rhodes (40) paved the way then skipper Taylor put the icing on the cake with a superb unbeaten 56 from just 23 balls, smashing four sixes and five fours.

Appleby Frodingham never looked like getting near their target and were all out for only 75 to fall a massive 122 runs short.

The wickets were taken by Charlie Bourne (3-16), Sam Wisniewski (3-16), Luke Baddeley (2-17) and Taylor (2-25).

However, a day earlier Thornes went down by seven wickets to Whitley Hall to slip down to fourth in the YSPL.

After being put in they soon found themselves in trouble at 46-3 and never really got going as they were all out for 134 with Akhtar (19) top scoring.

Hall then had little trouble reaching their target with almost 15 overs to spare to move up to sixth in the table.
