Leeds United boss is not giving up hope

Under fire Leeds United boss Neil Warnock has called for fans to keep the faith although last night’s 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough left them eight points off a play-off place and the same eight points ahead of a relegation spot.

Warnock had to endure chants of “time to go” from Leeds fans unhappy at their side’s latest failure away from home, but promised that the team would continue to fight for every point from now on.

The United manager said he sympathised with the fans, but they needed to know that the team’s recent failings was not for the want of trying.

He said: ”I can understand their frustrations. They’ve been through a lot with this club and it’s a massive, massive football club. Their expectations are high and they get frustrated. They’re perfectly entitled to do that.

“If we’d taken our opportunities then they’d have been chanting our names but that’s what you get in football.

“We’ve got to be positive and it is difficult. The glass is always half empty in Leeds and it needs to be half full. We’ve got to try and win our next three or four games and go gung-ho.

“You can only do your best as a manager and I think we’ve had a good season. We’ve got the makings of a good team. But we’ve had three open goals in three games, missed them and all hell’s let loose.

”You can’t miss chances like we did and expect to win a game. We had a couple of great chances and you just have to put them away.

”It’s been the same story in the last few games. Ross Barkley had one against Cardiff, the keeper at Wolves pulled off a great save to deny Luke Varney a certain goal on Saturday and Ross McCormack had a great one at Middlesbrough.

”If Ross scores that, we go on to the win game. They’d gone five without a win and if we get the goal you go on and win the game because their heads drop.

”Like I’ve always said, I can’t fault the effort, but I can’t go out there and try and take the chances myself. Instead of talking about taking nine points from nine, we’re talking about one and that’s disappointing and frustrating.”
