Leeds United sign England under 21 striker

Leeds United have boosted their squad with the addition of striker Connor Wickham on loan from Premier League Sunderland.

The England under 21 international has signed until the end of the season with the aim of strengthening the Whites’ attacking options after Luke Varney left the club for Blackburn recently.

The 20-year-old has struggled to make himself a regular starter for Sunderland and has spent time out on loan already this season, even scoring against Leeds when enjoying a successful spell with Sheffield Wednesday.

In 11 starts for the Owls he scored eight goals and also led the line well, making him an ideal potential partner for Ross McCormack as Leeds attempt to make a late push for a play-off place.

Wickham is likely to go straight into the squad for United’s Sky Bet Championship match at QPR this weekend.

“We are delighted to have signed Connor until the end of the season,” said United manager Brian McDermott.

“There was a lot of competition for his signature, but he was very keen to come and play at Leeds United. He is another young English player who has everything in front of him.”
