Ossett United in second after Potts goal earns West Yorkshire derby win

Reon Potts’ 20th minute goal proved the winner with Ossett defending well in the second half to see out their latest Pitching In Northern Premier League East match after playing some good football in the opening 45 minutes.

Frickley went into the contest with four wins from their first five league games, but Wayne Benn’s men were able to snuff out much of their danger to win 1-0.

With several defenders injured, Benn handed 17-year-old David Adewoju an instant debut after he joined from Huddersfield Town on a one month’s loan deal and the youngster went on to produce a superb performance to earn the man of the match and praise from his manager.

Ossett started well and forced home keeper Ben Bottomley into an early save as he tipped James Walshaw’s effort round the post.

More pressure followed and United went ahead when Aaron Haswell’s effort was well saved, but Potts followed up to score his fourth goal in three games.

The visitors put the ball in the net again when Nash Connolly rolled the ball into the net only for the referee to award a free-kick to Athletic after appearing to initially award a goal.

Frickley responded with a good strike from the edge of the area, but keeper Max Dearnley was able to save.

Ossett came close to another goal near the end of the half as Walshaw was denied by Bottomley after linking up well with Potts.

The second half saw Ossett having to come up with more of a rearguard effort as Frickley pushed to keep hold of their unbeaten home record.

But despite all their huffing and puffing the hosts struggled to create clear cut chances and United were able to keep their clean sheet.

Frickley’s best opportunity to grab a point saw Tyler Williams’ dangerous cross somehow evade attackers in the middle. They also saw a big shot for a penalty fall on deaf ears and Ossett survived for a hugely valuable three points to sit in second place in the table.
