In doing so he was registering his third British Junior Open title, the last English player to achieve that being his Pontefract clubmate James Willstrop 20 years ago.

Not only did Todd win, but he beat all of six opponents, Egyptian, Pakistani and Malaysian, without conceding a single game.

In the final he took on Malaysian Ishant Shah, dominating from start to finish as the scoreline of 11-4 11-2 11-2 indicates.

Todd will be 17 in March and apart from his PSA aspirations – he is already ranked 141 in the world – he will be looking to add the British Junior Open Under 19 title and the next World Under 19 Championship in Brisbane to his name.

Several other Pontefract juniors acquitted themselves with credit in Birmingham, with many of them having another year in the same age group.

Joe Royle won four of his five matches and Ben Beachill won four of his six, a welcome return to form after a troublesome 2019 of injuries and illness.
