The most valuable race on the card was the £40,000 EBF Northern Commercials Novice run over 1m2f and the enhanced prize money had attracted a decent field with Charlie Appleby, Ralph Beckett and Andrew Balding all sending horses north, writes Richard Hammill.
It was Ralph Beckett’s Sir Dinadan who was sent off the well supported favourite.

Hide AdFresh from victory in the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe on Sunday, jockey Rossa Ryan received a warm round of applause as he entered the Parade Ring to take the ride and will rarely have an easier winner than on this son of Camelot.
Clearly appreciating the step up in trip and the softer ground, Sir Dinadan made every yard of the running and stretched well clear in the home straight to win by eight lengths.
The winner is seemingly on a rapidly progressive curve and could be useful.
On a rare trip to Pontefract, James Doyle had three rides booked and made the long journey worthwhile by riding a double in the first and last races, both for his retained owner, Wathnan Racing, and both on well supported runners.

Hide AdVeydari, who had cost 200,000 guineas at the breeze ups, took the opening nursery for Richard Fahey in determined style. Dropping to 6f, the winner stayed on resolutely to score by 1¾ lengths.
Fine Interview was sent off favourite and took the final race for Hamad Al Jehani by an impressive 3¼ lengths, giving the trainer his first win at the West Yorkshire track.
There was also a double on the card for rising star Billy Loughnane.
First up, he steered Sam England’s admirable multi purpose horse, Glory and Honour, to victory in the Bluff Cove Stayers Handicap.

The jockey was then on board Charlie Johnston’s Urban Sprawl who bravely reeled in long time leader Style of Life to put his head in front in the shadows of the post.
Altmore went into everyone’s notebooks with the manner of his victory in the Constant Security Handicap over 6f.
William Haggas’ three-year-old was having just his third run, and his first in a handicap, and made a mockery of his opening mark when scoring effortlessly under Danny Tudhope.

Hide AdRestrained early on, Altmore pulled his way to the front in the home straight and readily stretched clear to win in effortless fashion.
He is likely to be hit by a big rise in the weights and could be turned out quickly before the handicapper can reassess him.
Tim Easterby was mob handed with runners throughout the Pontefract card and saddled three of the runners in the 5f handicap alone.
Music Society, Object and Profiteer were his representatives and it was the last named who knuckled down and had his head in front where it matters, Sean Kirrane was doing the steering for owners the Racing Knights.

Hide AdSea The Dream claimed the 1m Leslie Burton Handicap for Ed Bethell and Callum Rodriguez providing each of them with their fourth winner of the season at Pontefract.
The winner was carrying top weight and was much the best – stretching clear to land his third win of the season by 2½ lengths.
The final meeting of the 2024 season will be run on Monday, October 21 before the flat racing season hands over to the National Hunt courses.
A number of the winter horses will be stretching their legs on the track after the meeting and it is often a good chance to catch a first glimpse of some of the winter stars.
