The England international picked up a lower limb issue after rolling his ankle in pre-season training at the beginning of January.

The Wolves’ marquee signing has missed the opening two games of the season - which have seen Warrington lose at Wigan Warriors and beat reigning Super League champions St Helens

“I’m pretty confident Gareth will come into consideration next week,” said head coach Steve Price.

“Jack Hughes – I’m not too sure. I don’t think we’ve got any injuries [against St Helens].

“It’s important we don’t get carried away with ourselves and remain humble.

“We want to be a consistent rugby league team this season and that’s our challenge. We’ve got to back it up at Wakefield.”

Warrington secured an impressive 19-0 victory over St Helens last Friday to bounce back from a harsh opening-day defeat against Wigan.

Price felt it was one of Warrington’s best results since he took charge as they look to secure back-to-back wins against Wakefield.

He said: “It’s always pleasing when you put solid performances together. There were some really good signs last week. We built off the back of that and that was really encouraging.

“To keep a quality team like Saints to zero points is pleasing. They’re a fantastic rugby team but the energy we displayed across the line and the amount of work, effort and detail we were doing from the inside was first class. We were playing some rugby, too.

“We were playing fairly direct with a bit of ball movement, too.”

Wakefield were without a fixture last weekend after Storm Ciara caused disruptions to the rugby league fixture list.

Trinity had been instructed by the RFL to try and play their game with Catalans Dragons on Monday evening but that didn’t prove a feasible option.

The fixture will be arranged for a midweek night or if Trinity exit the Challenge Cup.
