On the right lines - Wakefield Trinity boss Chris Chester encouraged by Mason Lino's debut against Leeds Rhinos

The 27-year-old joined Trinity during the off-season from Newcastle Knights on a three-year contract and made his debut when Wakefield were beaten 28-22 by Leeds Rhinos three days ago.

Lino played at scrum-half, alongside captain Jacob Miller, and Chester admitted he has things to work on, but saw positive signs.

“I thought Mason was good,” Chester said.

“That combination will get better.

“I was disappointed with our end to sets, I thought that was probably the difference.

“They put us under a lot of pressure with their kicks, we were against a strong wind in the first half and we struggled to get out of our own end.

“We needed to do that to Leeds and we didn’t.”

Star of the opening game for Trinity was winger Tom Johnstone who scored two long-range tries.

Chester reckons if his halves can get the ball to their left-side, Trinity will be hard to handle.

“Tom was good,” he added.

“I know he is filthy with the try they scored at the back end, but I thought he carried the ball really strongly.

“He didn’t have a run out in the friendly and he will be better for the run.

“I thought he and BillTupou were a real handful on the left-edge.”
