Photos and reaction: Tigers have ‘smile on their faces’ in first Super League win of season over Giants

Castleford Tigers had “smiles on their faces” after mauling Huddersfield Giants 34-8 for their first win in this season’s Super League last night (Friday).

Tries from Liam Hood, Darnell McIntosh and George Lawler helped Ryan Carr’s men into a healthy 16-4 lead at the break at the OneBore Stadium.

A double from Tom Weaver, either side of a score from George Flanagan, kept the Tigers in control before the victory was rounded off with former Giants players Ashton Golding touching down on his Castleford debut.

It was the perfect response from Cas after defeats in their opening two games at home to Wigan Warriors and then away at newly-promoted Toulouse.

And they got off to the best possible start with former Wakefield Trinity star Hood spotting a gap in the Huddersfield defence and diving over for his second try of the season for his new club.

The Giants responded with some pressure of their own but a timely knock-on gave the Cas defence a reprieve. And they took full advantage when McIntosh scrambled over to make it 10-0.

And when Taane Milne was sent to the sin bin after 24 minutes, the Tigers again pounced with Lawler going over under the sticks after a great pick-out by Hood.

Jacob Gagai got the Giants on the board just before the hooter but it only took Cas seven minutes after the restart to go back further ahead when Tom Weaver grabbed his first for the club by diving on to a Daejarn Asi grubber kick.

Flanagan reduced the deficit to 22-8 but Weaver made it a double for himself after superb work from Joe Westerman.

And Golding completed the scoring by crashing over the line with just five minutes remaining to seal the Tigers’ first win of Super League 2026 in style.

Carr told BBC Radio Leeds after the victory:

“That's what we play for, we play to win and play for this feeling right now. I’m really happy for my team and really happy for everyone involved in our club because a lot of work has gone into getting to this point. And there will continue to be a lot more work.

“But to be able to see them with a smile on their faces, with all the hard work they have done since day one of pre-season, is enjoyable.

“But it is one win, we have to keep making sure we perform consistently every week now.”
