Wakefield Trinity perform like 'worst-disciplined' team in Super League in defeat to Castleford Tigers, reflects frustrated head coach Chris Chester

WAKEFIELD Trinity head coach Chris Chester blasted the display from some his players as they lost for the 14th-consecutive game against derby rivals Castleford Tigers on Friday night.

Trinity went into the game on the back of a superb win over Warrington Wolves and looked on course to end their five-year wait for a victory over the Tigers when they led 15-14 at half time.

But Wakefield played 20 minutes of the second half a man down as Romain Navarrete and James Batchelor were both sin-binned.

Castleford scored 18 unanswered points to claim victory and Chester said that some of his squad had played their way out of Sunday’s fixture at Salford Red Devils.

“I am really disappointed with our discipline. You give that many penalties away and have two players sin-binned,” said a frustrated Chester.

“We were awful in that second half.

“We were really disciplined last week against Warrington to being the worst-disciplined team in the competition. I am disappointed with some individuals.

“There will be a few guys dropping down this week because they really let the team down. On the whole I thought we were really good value in that first 40 minutes, I thought we were the better side.”

Trinity had the better of a competitive first half as Joe Westerman scored the opening try while Ryan Hampshire, who broke his jaw during the game, kicked the conversion and added a penalty goal.

But the hosts hit back with Cheyse Blair and Derrell Olpherts dotting down while Danny Richardson added one conversion from two attempts.

Tom Johnstone scored an incredible try to regain the lead, diving over to plant down one handed in the corner.

James Clare’s try put Castleford two points ahead but another penalty goal from Hampshire and a drop-goal from Jacob Miller saw the away side head into the interval with the advantage.

But the Tigers romped to victory with a ruthless second-half display as Clare and Olpherts claimed their second tries either side of Oliver Holmes's four pointer.

Richardson added six more points with the boot, converting two tries and a last-minute penalty goal.

“It was a great finish from Tom, we couldn’t actually see it because we didn’t have a replay,” said Chester of Johnstone’s try.

“We lost Joe Arundel towards the back end of the first half and that had a big effect on us defensively.

“We had to play back-rowers in the centres and then we lost two players through lack of discipline.

“It is just a disappointing effort. That is the best opportunity we have had in a long time to beat Cas. We let ourselves down in that second half.”

It was revealed on Monday that Joe Arundel is ruled out for the remainder of the season after rupturing his ACL at the end of the first half against Castleford.

But Chester is happy with the cover he has got in the centre positions, with Ryan Atkins likely to feature against Salford on Sunday afternoon.

He added: “We have got Ryan Atkins waiting in the wings, it is a position we are fairly strong in.

“It is disappointing for Joe but Atkins is going to get an opportunity next week.”

Salford were beaten 22-8 by Leeds Rhinos in their last outing, making it three defeats in their opening four games to start to the campaign.

The Red Devils beat Toronto Wolfpack at the beginning of March but have also been beaten by Huddersfield Giants - who are unbeaten in three games - and current Super League champions St Helens.
