Wainwright and Corrie actor sign up for Castleford

Former Yorkshire and Derbyshire player David Wainwright is Castleford Cricket Club's new first-team captain.

The 30-year-old all-rounder will lead Castleford in their first season in the newly formed Yorkshire Premier League North.

Left-arm spin bowler Wainwright has been affiliated with Castleford since he made his debut as a 14 year old against Barnsley, claiming 7-36.

He has spent the past 12 years on the professional county circuit and he has also represented the England Lions. He bagged 3-26 for the Lions against Pakistan A in Dubai in 2010.

He also played for England as a substitute fielder in a Test match against the West Indies at Headingley in 2007.

Yorkshire League North is one of the four premier leagues created in the new structure for club cricket in Yorkshire. Castleford are joined by six other clubs from the disbanded Yorkshire League and five clubs from the York and District Senior League.

Castleford-based Coronation Street star Colson Smith has been associated with the town’s cricket club for a number of years.  He is heavily involved in helping the club move forward and is assisting in both obtaining sponsorship and finding players.

Castleford are looking to recruit further players for the forthcoming campaign.

Indoor nets sessions are being held at Stumps Cricket Centre, Wakefield (07843 147940) every Sunday (11am start) each Sunday upto and including March 20. 

Players interested in playing for Castleford first-team, second-team or junior section are invited to attend net practice. Players just need to turn up and theywill be welcomed.

In addition, the club requires scorers and umpires.
