Traffic and travel: Councillor criticises Wakefield Council’s plans to tackle speeding on Thornes Road

Concerns have been raised over a proposal to install speed bumps on Thornes Road in Wakefield.

Wakefield Council said the road had been prioritised for road safety measures because of speeding taking place there.

A consultation on the scheme was carried out, which the council said received “overwhelming support”.

Coun Michael Graham said the proposals include installing 13 sets of speed bumps on the road, and, posting on Facebook, said the scheme “will not address the real cause of speeding on this road”.

A proposal to tackle speeding on Thornes Road has been criticised by a councillor.

Coun Graham had previously said he had been contacted by “many residents” who oppose the proposals, who would instead prefer a speed camera to tackle the speeding issue on the road.

He said he would push for a “solution that improves safety while reflecting residents’ views”.

In response, Joe Jenkinson, Wakefield Council’s Service Director for Planning, Transportation and Strategic Highways, said: “Thornes Road has been prioritised for road safety measures due to speeding traffic.

“A scheme has been developed to provide traffic calming measures and a consultation has been carried out with elected members, key stakeholders such as emergency services and bus operators, as well as 166 residential properties, all with overwhelming support.

“As such, work to install speed reduction measures will begin in Spring 2026.”
