Julie Wombwell runs Papersmile, in Normanton, where she sells cards and gifts and has already begun gearing up for Christmas.

But after speaking with friends and customers, she realised that many people with underlying health conditions still feel unable to return to shopping without putting themselves at risk.

She has now begun accepting appointments for individuals or households to visit the shop outside of its normal trading hours, allowing people to take their time and shop in a safe, socially-distanced manner.

Julie said: "I have a friend, she has a health condition and she's not been out to the shop. During lockdown we were online so I was taking bits up to her and leaving them on the doorstep.

"Life's carrying on for everyone else but she's still shielding. It's seven months since she's been shopping or done girly stuff.

"I thought why can't I do this for other people who haven't been able to get out? It's my shop, my rules.

"People are very enthusiastic. I had a couple of people message and make appointments already. One of the ladies isn't shielding but suffers terribly with anxiety and can't be where there's crowds of people.

"One lady asked if she could bring her husband and I said he's welcome to come in.

"I just try and accommodate as much as I can really. I'll be at the till behind the screen so they can take their time."

Julie had initially planned to host the sessions only in the run up to the festive season, but now says she is making plans to continue into the New Year.

And she hopes other independent retailers will catch on to the idea and offer their own sessions for shielding shoppers.

She said: "It's something I'm going to carry on because it makes you realise how much people are struggling. If I can stay open for an extra hour so people can come shopping by themselves then I will. We've all got to help each other at the moment.

"It's been a brilliant response. It would be lovely if other people could do it as well."
