20 things for kids to do in Wakefield, Pontefract and Castleford this summer
It’s summer holiday time again and for parents everywhere it’s a challenge to keep youngsters amused and entertained for six weeks or more.

As well as heading for paid-for attractions there are plenty of other ways of having an enjoyable time that needn’t cost the earth - or even anything at all.
Bike rides, nature walks, a treasure hunt in the garden or a picnic in the park with a group of friends are all ways to spend an hour or two on a budget.

13. Pontefract Castle
Fun and education don’t always go hand in hand, but a series of clubs and workshops at Pontefract Castle is hoping to change this. The historic site will play host to nature clubs and family workshops throughout August, as well as the hugely popular Seaside on Tour event. Wakefield’s festival on tour will take place across the district. There is family fun including giant inflatables, live music and workshops such as monster mask making and traditional sports day activities. In Castleford, Wakefield, Ossett, Featherstone and South Elmsall, there will be a giant sandpit and seaside activities with a digger performance in Ossett and Featherstone. The RSPB has launched its free Wild Challenge Scheme which includes 30 nature based activities inspiring families to get closer to nature, discover ways to help it, and earn awards at the same time. By completing three Wild Challenge activities to ‘Experience Nature’ and three to ‘Help Nature’ you can progress through a Wild Challenge Award level.

Blacker Hall has launched its Little Farmers Trail which is perfect for children to meet a few of the farm animals, explore ther outside area and take part in some fun games and activities including, bird watching and a ‘vegetable’ treasure hunt.
