As well as heading for paid-for attractions there are plenty of other ways of having an enjoyable time that needn’t cost the earth - or even anything at all.
Bike rides, nature walks, a treasure hunt in the garden or a picnic in the park with a group of friends are all ways to spend an hour or two on a budget.

9. Grow Wild
Grow Wild is Grow Wakefield’s fun and safe holiday club for children aged eight -11. Qualified and experienced staff encourage children to take part in a variety of age appropriate activities including gardening, cookery, arts, crafts and outdoor games. Grow Wild runs Tuesday to Friday (9am-4pm) and there are sessions at South Hiendley, Normanton and Lupset. More information and booking at growwakefield.
Wakefield Gym Club is holding a holiday club for six weeks during the holidays. You don’t have to be a gymnast, it’s a fun activity for any child from £20 full day or £12.50 half days. More details at 07810 673669 or email [email protected]
Art adventurers is running themed art and craft play sessions at Walton Village Hall and West Wakefield Methodist Church during August More details at www.artventurers.co.uk
Dinosaurs will be making a welcome return to Wakefield city centre this summer.
From August 19 to September 4, visitors will be able to see up close the lifelike displays of prehistoric creatures in Trinity Walk, The Ridings Shopping Centre and another location that's yet to be announced.
