Grove Lea Primary School makes global headlines with rare Google recognition
A Pontefract primary school is celebrating after being named a Google Reference School - a prestigious accolade awarded to only a select number of schools around the world.
Grove Lea Primary School, which is part of the Inspire Partnership Multi Academy Trust, has been recognised for its innovative approach to using technology to support teaching and learning.
The school underwent a rigorous evaluation process before being awarded the status, demonstrating how digital technology has become an important part of everyday life in the classroom.
Assessors looked at a number of areas, including the school’s use of Google Workspace across the curriculum, the professional development of its teaching staff and the impact technology is having on pupils’ learning.

A high proportion of Grove Lea’s teachers have also achieved Google Certified Educator status, highlighting the school’s commitment to developing staff expertise and making the most of digital tools.
The recognition is more than simply an award for the school. As a Google Reference School, Grove Lea will now have the opportunity to share its experience with other schools in the region.
The school will act as a regional hub of excellence, welcoming educators from neighbouring schools to see first-hand how technology can be used to engage pupils, enrich lessons and support better educational outcomes.
For staff and pupils at Grove Lea, the achievement represents recognition of the work already taking place across the school — while giving them an exciting opportunity to help other schools explore new ways of bringing technology into the classroom.
Trust Digital Lead/Assistant Headteacher at Grove Lea, Luke Shackleton has been the driving force behind the award, supported by Headteacher, Natalie Wilson.
Mrs Wilson, said: “Achieving Google Reference School status is a proud milestone for our entire school community.
"It highlights the dedication of our staff and the enthusiasm of our pupils in using technology to make learning more engaging, collaborative, and accessible for everyone.”
The school’s new status places Grove Lea among a small group of schools internationally recognised for their leadership and innovation in digital education, making it a significant achievement for the school and the wider Pontefract community.
