West Yorkshire was due to be put under the tightest possible restrictions at the start of this month, before the government decided to reintroduce lockdown for all of England until December 2.

An announcement on what will happen to individual areas after that is expected this week.

November 26 update: Confirmation Wakefield placed in Tier ThreeBut the leader of Wakefield Council, Denise Jeffery said it was "probably likely" the district will be put into Tier Three, where the strictest rules on public life would apply.

It is not known yet whether those regulations will be exactly the same as before, though it's been reported that areas subject to tightest restrictions will be offered mass testing.

Speaking on a live Q&A session on Facebook on Monday, Coun Jeffery said: "There are a series of meetings with the government that myself and (deputy leader) Jack (Hemingway) will be attending this week.

"Of course what happens depends on numbers and how things go this week, so we'll see."

Coun Jeffery again criticised the government for "making decisions at the last minute".

She added: "We'd had many discussions about going into Tier Three. It had been agreed across West Yorkshire.

"We asked the government then if they were going to go back into lockdown, and they said "No, definitely not."

"And then the next day they did it."

Wakefield's Covid infection rate dipped slightly last week from 521 cases per 100,000 to 406.

However, Public Health figures have revealed that more than a sixth of the district's total case numbers have been recorded in the past fortnight.

There have been 2,712 positive tests reported over the last 14 days, bringing Wakefield's overall number to 12,651 since March.

The area's director of public health, Anna Hartley, thanked the public for complying with the rules, but urged people not to remain "careful and cautious."

Commenting on the figures, she said: "For the first wave we weren't capturing every case, so the figures are a bit skewed. But it still shows the impact Covid has had over the last 14 days.

"We do need to make usre that we aren't in any way complacent because we've a long way to go before numbers are low enough to reduce pressure on our hospital system."

Last week, trade union UNISON said that staffing levels at Pinderfields Hospital had shrunk to "dangerous levels".
