Man with conviction for violence blocked from running town bar

Police even wrote to Kirklees Council to object to Mohammed Shabir becoming the designated premises supervisor (DPS) for Le Choix, on Station Road.

Mr Shabir was convicted in February of attacking a customer in a takeaway where he was working.

After an argument broke out over a promotion, Mr Shabir came from behind the counter, knocked the victim to the floor and repeatedly stamped on his head.

Found guilty of assault, he was ordered to pay £360 in costs and made to wear an electronic tag.

In a letter written by West Yorkshire Police’s licencing officer, Richard Woodhead, in October, he said that Mr Shabir had failed to inform the council of his conviction, which he was required to do.

He added: “Due to the nature of the assault, West Yorkshire Police feel he is not suitable to hold the position of DPS for the Le Choix bar.

“The bar in question has a notable increase in crime and disorder and a number of serious assaults, including a glassing, in the last three weeks.”

The licensing panel at Kirklees Council subsequently turned down Mr Shabir’s application during a meeting on Monday, December 12.
