Maureen’s ‘honour’ at second stint as Featherstone mayor

The announcement was made at the council’s annual meeting at Featherstone Town Hall last month.

Coun Tennant-King, who has been on the council since 1999, works as a carer and a dining room assistant at St Thomas’ Junior School in the town.

It will be her second term as mayor after also being chosen in 2002-2003.

She said: “It means a lot to me to be mayor. To be asked once is thrilling but to be asked twice is a real honour.

“I’m really looking forward to it and meeting lots of different people and community groups.”

Coun Tennant-King, 60, took the mayoral chains from Coun Jan Power, who raised thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support during her year as mayor.

Coun Tennant-King’s husband Terry King and granddaughter Emily Carter, 16, will be her consort.

She will raise money for the Alzehimer’s Society during her time as mayor.

She said: “I am an avid Featherstone Rovers fan. I go to every game home and away and I am a trustee on the club’s foundation.

“I love Featherstone and am very proud to be the town’s mayor.”

One of Coun Tennant-King’s first events as mayor will be this year’s Featherstone Gala.

The annual event, will take place on Saturday, July 4 and feature a parade from St Wilfrid’s Catholic High School into the town.

The council is looking for organisations wanting to take part in the parade.

There will also be a fancy dress competition for children with the theme of American Independence Day.

There will be three age groups for children aged under 10, under seven and under five.
