'I’m terrified of heights, but i’m doing it!' Helen takes on Wakefield Hospice abseil

This October, Wakefield Cathedral will see a host of daredevils brave the descent down Wakefield Cathedral’s 164ft tower in a sponsored abseil for their hospice.

Taking place on Saturday, October 10, the charity abseil will see supporters descend 164ft down the tower of Wakefield Cathedral to the precinct below, raising vital funds to support Wakefield Hospice.

Helen Gent is taking part this year, and admits she is aprehensive.

“I am absolutely terrified of heights, so everyone who knows me will know just how big a deal this is for me,” she said.

"I’m taking on the Wakefield Hospice Abseil in memory of Cameron Medlock, who was the older brother of my daughter’s boyfriend, Blake.

"Cameron had a brain tumour and sadly passed away at such a young age. It was an incredibly difficult and traumatic time.

"Wakefield Hospice were amazing at supporting the family, and I couldn’t think of a better charity to take on this challenge for. I’ve never done anything like this before, so it’s definitely going to push me out of my comfort zone!”

Laura Longfield, Challenge Events Fundraiser at Wakefield Hospice, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Helen and all of our amazing abseilers for taking on this challenge and helping to raise vital funds for Wakefield Hospice, it takes real courage to step outside your comfort zone, and we’re so inspired by everyone who’s taking part.

“We wish everyone taking part all the very best of luck and, most importantly, hope they enjoy this once in a lifetime experience!”
