Wakefield winter coat appeal: Residents urged to donate unwanted coats

Wakefield residents are being urged to donate unwanted coats and jackets to help vulnerable people stay warm this winter.

Wakefield Council and Biffa have launched a winter coat donation appeal, with donations being accepted at selected locations across the district from November 9 to 15.

Residents are asked to look out for purple bins displaying Wakefield Donation Drive stickers.

Coats and jackets for adults, children and babies can all be donated, provided they are clean, free from rips and tears, fitted with working zips or buttons and free from corporate branding.

Donation points include all libraries across the district, the community gift box at Trinity Walk, Red Roof Centre CIC, Havercroft and Ryhill Community Learning Project and St Mary’s Community Centre.

The donated clothing will be distributed to vulnerable residents and community groups across the district.

Coun Julian Carter, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “"Many people will have coats hanging in their wardrobes that are no longer worn but could make a real difference to someone facing a difficult winter.

"By donating your unwanted coats, you're helping local people stay warm while also preventing useful clothing from going to waste."

The appeal is part of a wider Wakefield Council and Biffa campaign encouraging residents to repair, reuse, rehome or recycle unwanted clothing rather than putting textiles in household waste bins.

Residents recycled an average of more than 360 tonnes of textiles a year through Household Waste Recycling Centres and Bring Sites between 2023 and 2025.
