Our Year 2024: Here are 10 top things to do in Wakefield, Pontefract and Castleford this August

As Our Year – Wakefield District 2024 continues its programme of 366 things to do in the Wakefield district, there’s lots going on throughout August.
Our Year is a year-long programme of spectacles, unique festivals, major events and community-led activities that will celebrate all that the Wakefield district has to offer from art, heritage, sport and music to food and drink.
And in April, there’s something for everyone, whether it’s meeting some dinosaurs at Trinity Walk, see the amazing Hatchling, or tasting some delicious food.
When: 21-31 August. Wakefield Youth Music Theatre present the breath-taking musical smash hit Evita. The award-winning musical blockbuster features such memorable songs as Buenos Aires, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Oh What a Circus and of course the unforgettable Don’t Cry For Me Argentina. When: 17 August. The Portobello Gala is a vibrant celebration of community, bringing together residents of all backgrounds for a day brimming with sports, creativity, activity and entertainment! Expect live performances, walkaround entertainment, face painting, interactive session with African drummers, a climbing wall and more. When: 23-26 August. This bank holiday weekend, Carlton Street in Castleford will come alive with the irresistible aromas and flavours of over 25 different street food vendors. From 10am to 6pm daily, indulge in a diverse array of delicious dishes from around the world. When: 1 August. Enjoy a free family gala at Friarwood Valley Gardens to celebrate Yorkshire Day! Expect fun for the whole family with a bouncy castle and slide, swing boats, bubble cart, ferret racing, Punch and Judy shows, and free games.
