Plans for Wakefield multi-use games area withdrawn
Plans for a new multi-use games area at a Wakefield park have been withdrawn after attracting both support and concerns over its proposed location.
The proposal would have seen an enclosed multi-use games area (MUGA) measuring 32m by 18m built at Agbrigg Road Play Area, together with a footpath.
Sport England said the Football Foundation and West Riding Football Association had no prior knowledge of the site and that it was not listed on Pitch Finder.
It said the site was likely to be used for recreational football and that the proposed development would continue to provide a facility for that use.

It concluded: “Sport England has no objection to the proposal.”
Public comments on the application showed support for improved facilities, although some people questioned where the MUGA should be located.
One commenter said: “We support improving facilities for young people, but it may be better for the MUGA to be located on the north side of the park, away from Agbrigg Road.”
The commenter said it would help preserve the open view from the road, reduce the visual impact on the park entrance and make better use of an area that was currently less used.
Another resident objected to the proposed location but said they supported the principle of the development.
They wrote: “I fully support investment in recreational facilities for young people and the wider community. However, I believe that relocating the MUGA to the other side of the children's play area would achieve these benefits while better preserving the appearance and openness of Agbrigg Park.”
Another commenter, recorded as supporting the application, similarly suggested moving the MUGA away from Agbrigg Road.
They said: “I support investment in new recreational facilities, but I believe this alternative location would better maintain the park's appearance and open character.”
A separate supporting comment said the proposed development would enhance security, improve user safety and provide a modern and accessible sporting facility.
It also argued that the location would minimise potential noise disturbance and nuisance to nearby residents.
The documents do not state whether the comments about relocating the MUGA played any part in the decision to withdraw the application.
